The STARLIGHT project attended the Research and Innovation Symposium for European Security 2024 (RISE-SD) in Chalkidiki, Greece, from October 16–17, 2024.
This key European event focused on security research and innovation, bringing together experts and EU officials to discuss challenges and solutions in areas like fighting crime, cybersecurity, and border management.
STARLIGHT's coordinator, Dr. Nizar Touleimat of CEA-List, presented the project's innovative approach to AI research for law enforcement. He highlighted the importance of building on past experiences and current capabilities to anticipate future security needs, emphasising a responsible and ethical approach to AI development and implementation. A central aspect of STARLIGHT's methodology is the co-development (CODEV) approach, involving close collaboration between Law Enforcement Agencies (LEAs) and technology developers. This ensures that AI solutions are tailored to the specific needs of LEAs, promoting effective adoption and maximising impact in the fight against crime and terrorism.
Nizar also participated in a panel discussion on "European Research and Innovation for Security: Moving forward while looking back," alongside key figures like Giannis Skiadaresis from DG HOME, Ernesto La Mattina of ENG, and Professor Babak Akhgar OBE from CENTRIC Research. The panel explored achievements and challenges in security research, with participants providing insights into AI's role in addressing current and future threats.
This event provided valuable opportunities for networking with other R&D projects and stakeholders and fostering further collaboration within the European security research ecosystem. Many thanks to the organisers for making this possible.
